Peugeot announces electric concept car and new EV-only platforms

Alongside the concept car announcement, Peugeot’s CEO, Linda Jackson said: “Peugeot is committed to the electrification of its range.
Khodrocar - 2023 has arrived – and the flurry of ICE (internal combustion engine) car manufacturers heading for the exit door marked ‘EV’ is continuing.  Peugeot this week announced the Inception Concept EV, (based on its new EV-only STLA platform) and its plans for becoming an all-electric manufacturer by 2030.

Alongside the concept car announcement, Peugeot’s CEO, Linda Jackson said: "Peugeot is committed to the electrification of its range.

"In 2023, our entire line-up will be electrified and in the next two years, five new 100% electric models will be launched. Our ambition is simple: to make Peugeot the leading electric brand in Europe by 2030. This objective and ambitious vision pave the way for a radical transformation for the brand, as represented by the Inception Concept.”

The Inception Concept is based on the new STLA Large platform, which is to be one of four new BEV-only platforms that the Stellantis Groupa of companies will be introducing from 2023.

In STLA form, the concept is powered by a 100kWh battery, providing a range of almost 800 km through efficiency measures that result in an average 12.5 kWh/100 km. With two electric motors driving all four wheels, it is expected to produce almost 680hp and accelerate from 0-100 km/h in under three seconds.

The STLA platform also features 800V technology, enabling it to add close to 150 km of range in just five minutes as well as support wireless induction charging.

Whilst concept cars are generally ‘pie in the sky’ predictions of what future cars might look like, they are usually good pointers to the general design parameters and features we will see from a brand in the medium term. This one has design cues and features that Peugeot plan to begin introducing from 2025.

At the front, it features an all-new light signature incorporating the Peugeot lion’s head/claw design. This is merged with the front grille to create a single object that also houses the sensors.

Exterior-wise, the Inception Concept is 5 m long and 1.34m high and, just like the move from horse and carriage to the horseless one (where the first ones looked like horse-drawn carriages with the horses removed) the Inception Concept is starting to evolve the shape of a car.

It is also reshaping the passenger compartment to take advantage of the freed-up space from the shapes imposed on existing cars by their former ICE (internal combustion engine) drivetrain.

For the driver, Peugeot is imagining a whole new interface involving an all-new, ‘Hypersquare’ control system that does away with the conventional steering wheel in favour of digital electric controls and steer-by-wire technology.

More ‘out-there’ ideas in the concept (ones we might see in the longer-term) include an ‘i-Cockpit’ platform and STLA AutoDrive, enabling Level 4b autonomous driving. When driving is delegated, the Hypersquare retracts and a large panoramic screen slides out from the floor to offer a new passenger compartment experience.
